Personal injury claims have been given a bad reputation in the past with solicitors being portrayed as greedy in many Hollywood movies. But for lots of people, compensation after an accident that wasn’t their fault is not about greed but about being able to get on with life.

If you’ve had an accident that has caused you financial loss or to undertake ongoing treatment, you may well have a case to make a personal injury claim.

In order to build the strongest case possible you should compile as much evidence about the incident as possible. If you accident was at work, your solicitor will need to see a copy of the accident book where all accidents should be recorded. If it was a car accident, take pictures of the damage caused to the car and gather witness statements. You should keep all doctors reports about your injury and keep a record of costs of any treatments you undergo.

A lot of solicitors firms offer a free initial consultation so it is wise to make the most of this. Take all your evidence along with you and write down a list of questions that you have. You should ask your solicitor about the process involved and what they estimate the costs will be. After your meeting, they will send you a letter confirming that they are going to be representing you and everything that you discussed in your meeting. If you are happy with this letter you should let them know to start moving forward with your case.

After this, you solicitor will take a lead with most things. They will contact the defendant by way of a letter letting them know that you are making the claim, how much you are claiming for and asking for their response as to whether they consider themselves liable.

The simplest route after the letter is that the defendant accepts the charge and the case can usually be settled between solicitors out of court. However, if they deny responsibility you will most likely need to attend a court hearing. Here a judge will review the case and all evidence presented and pass judgement on the amount of compensation to be paid.
